As reported by several news outlets in California, a statue honoring the sacrifices made by Native American veterans is currently touring the state, stopping off in several Native communities.
A 12-foot bronze sculpture, “The Gift” by A. Thomas Schomberg has been selected by the official American Indian Alaska Native (AIAN) Veterans Memorial Committee, a Chumash spokesman said.
“We are pleased to host ‘The Gift’ as (committee members) make their way through California on a state-wide tour,” said Kenneth Kahn, tribal chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. “As a tribe, it is important for us to honor our veterans and recognize them for their service to our country.”
Members of the AIAN Veterans Memorial Committee hope the statue’s tour brings awareness to the need for a more permanent memorial of our veterans.
