Strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake kills scores in central Mexico

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.1 has rocked central Mexico killing at least 134 people and toppling buildings in the capital.

According to the US geological survey, the epicentre of the quake was located in the central Puebla state, close to Mexico city.

Rescue teams rushed to the hardest-hit areas. It’s feared many remain trapped beneath the rubble.

President Enrique Peña Nieto has urged people to avoid the streets so emergency services can easily reach the injured.

destroyed buildings
Mexico City’s mayor says around 40 buildings have been damaged or destroyed in the heavily populated capital.

Thousands of people rushed into the streets in panic, and millions lost electricity when the quake struck around lunchtime.

Witnesses described sirens blaring as first responders rushed through the streets of the capital, and people scrambling amid the ruins of buildings, searching for survivors.

The earthquake comes on the anniversary of the devastating 1985 tremor that left 10,000 people dead and just a few days after another measuring 8.1 which killed 98 people.
